Why did they take a month to get the word out on this child? LE waste so much time, this should've been in the mainstream media within the hour of this girl being reported as missing. Damn idiots.
I know this area very well, my ex used to work in Albion & when I lived in Brockport I would go to Albion to shop sometimes and my doctor was located there. Albion is a very, very depressed area, mostly large fruit & vegetable farms, big ones and in saying that, the area is loaded with what I call "cabbage pickers", mexicans. They work the local farms and yes there are some they stay on all winter as well as the summer/fall months. I forget what the proper name for them is but LE might want to check all the local farms, thoroughly.
Albion has more than their fair share of "low lifes".
Streaming prayers that Katherine is found soon, safe.

As we are "neighbors" I too know of Albion and have been through there many times.
I think the term you were searching for is "migrant" or "itinerant" farm workers.

Brother-in-law charged with killing missing 15-year-old girl

Updated: Saturday, 19 Feb 2011, 7:02 PM EST
ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) - Katherine Sanchez was
missing for more than a month before police in Orleans County found her
body. Her brother-in-law is now locked up on murder charges. Police
notified the family late Friday night that Katherine had been murdered
and that her brother-in-law, 21-year-old Carlos Cardenas, is charged
with the crime. Katherine disappeared on the night of January
14th in the village of Albion. The 15-year-old's family says she was
last seen at her sister's house babysitting. That sister is Kimberly
Cardenas, the suspect's wife. Kimberly says when she returned home the
night of January 14th and found her sister was missing, Carlos assured
her that Katherine would be found. Kimberly says he never showed any
signs of having been involved in her disappearance. "My parents
would tell me that he is a good kid, that he was just getting out of
school, that he was good. Nobody, I couldn't even believe it, that he
did something. He sickens me. He is one, one nasty man that can do
something to my sister like that. She was innocent; she didn't do
nothing to him," said Kimberly. The victim's aunt, Aster
Martinez, said, "It's a puzzle that came together. Unfortunately, five
weeks, it's taken them that long." Police recovered Katherine's
body in an apple orchard. According to the family, Carlos confessed. The
family told News 4 that Katherine was raped and had been killed over
time. Blood was found in the basement of the home Katherine had been
babysitting in. The family says they are both devastated and angry. "We
are also devastated with the police here in Albion. They didn't partake
very fast to what they were asking them, that they felt she didn't
leave with a boyfriend or something. The police were saying she might
have run away, but her mother had an instinct that there was something
wrong. She (Kimberly) told them about the blood in the basement and they
completely ignored her. And they were joking among themselves, stating
that the blood that was in the basement must have belonged to an animal
or something like that," said Martinez. Police in Albion have no
comment and are not answering any questions. A press release regarding
Katherine's disappearance was not released to the media until Friday
night, the same night they told the family Katherine had been murdered
and they had arrested Carlos, charging him with second degree murder. Katherine
was in the ninth grade at Albion High School. Though students are off
for President's Day next week, the Albion Schools Superintendent reports
that grief counselors will be available for anyone who needs them on
Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Albion High School on
East Avenue. Albion Police are expected to hold a press conference on Monday.http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/crime/Brother-in-law-charged-with-killing-missing-15-year-old-girl

Sounds to me like a complete cock-up by LE. Mind you, if my daughter/sister was missing and I found blood in the basement there is no way I would have let LE get away with flipping it off. I would have got it tested myself if it came down to that!
Weird case. Wonder why they published the missing bulletin when they already knew she was dead.

No doubt she was like putty in his hands as she was being given attention by an "older man". There's little mention of Kathy's home life but I am willing to bet that the perp became somewhat of a father figure to her.
Interesting that she was babysitting for the perp and his wife (Kathy's sister), yet he was home.
Were they doing separate things and couldn't watch the kid(s)?
Did he plan this specifically so he could get some "alone time" with her?

The family of an Albion teenager says she's been found dead more than a month after she was first reported missing.
The teen's brother-in-law is behind bars, charged in connection with her death.
Albion police say they believe they've recovered the body of
15-year-old Katherine Sanchez. Sanchez was last seen on January 14.
Her sister's husband, 21-year-old Carlos Cardenas is charged with
second-degree murder.
“She was always happy, smiling. If you saw her, she's not the type
of girl who'd go mess around,” said Sanchez’s cousin, Yazmin Serafin.

Serafin
says Sanchez had a bright future ahead. She grew up in Albion and was a
sophomore at Albion Central High School. She says Sanchez loved kids
and pets, and was thinking about a career in teaching. But that all
changed Friday, when the family says Sanchez's body was found buried in
an apple orchard in nearby Eagle Harbor.
“We waited to see if she was at a friend's house or something for her to call us,” said Sanchez’s sister, Kimberly Cardenas.
Cardenas says the family waited five days to report Sanchez missing.
She says her husband, Carlos Cardenas, had always been a suspect, but
she says it wasn't until police arrested him for drunk driving that
Cardenas confessed to killing Sanchez.
“I was with him three years. I didn't think he was capable of doing
that,” said an emotional Cardenas. “All the weeks she was gone he was
like she's probably with the family, she's probably with a boyfriend,
she probably ran away -- and just being there for me and acting normal
-- he was sick in the head.”
All Albion Police will say for now is that after a joint
investigation between the State Police, Sheriff's Office, and
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Cardenas was arrested and charged
with second-degree murder. He was arraigned last night.
But that’s little comfort for a family grieving the loss of a life cut tragically short.

Sanchez
leaves behind her mother, father, four sisters, and a brother. The
family says she'll be cremated and they're currently finalizing funeral
arrangements.
Meanwhile, Carlos Cardenas is expected to be back in Albion Town
Court on Thursday. We expect to hear more from Albion Police once the
medical examiners office releases its findings.
Officials from the Albion Central School District tell us counselors will be available Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Police have recovered the body of a missing 15-year-old Albion girl and charged her brother-in-law with killing her.Carlos
Cardenas, 21, was arraigned Friday night on charges of second-degree
murder in the death of Katherine Sanchez, police in this Orleans County
village said Saturday.Katherine had been missing for more than a month.Authorities
provided few details Saturday about the case and were awaiting autopsy
results from the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office before
releasing more information. But a relative of the victim said Cardenas raped and killed his sister-in-law, then buried her in a shallow grave."They
found her [Friday] around 3 o'clock," said Aster Martinez, who
identified herself as Katherine's aunt. "They pulled her out of an apple
orchard."Martinez provided this account of what happened:Katherine was last seen the night of Jan. 14, when she was baby-sitting at her sister Kimberly's house.Kimberly and Carlos Cardenas, who have been married for about a year, have two little boys. When Kimberly Cardenas returned, her husband was home, but Katherine was gone.Where was Katherine? she asked him. Cardenas said he didn't know."Investigators
were puzzled," said Martinez, who was reached by phone Saturday. "They
believed she had run away, because her coat was left, and her cell
phone."As recently as Friday, Albion police were asking for the
public's help in locating the 4-foot, 10-inch girl, who was last seen
wearing skinny blue jeans and a green shirt. But Rosa Maldonado, Katherine's mother, had been suspicious all along."Her
mother always suspected there was something wrong. The pieces didn't
fit with what was going on," Martinez said. "Katherine didn't have a
boyfriend. She was a good student, very friendly, never got in trouble
in school. She was always well spoken, respectful."A short time after Katherine disappeared, her mother inspected the basement of the house and found blood.Police initially dismissed any foul play, Martinez said, but later took samples. The blood, she said, came back as Katherine's.Cardenas,
a Mexican national, had been picked up on a drunken-driving charge and
found to be in the United States illegally. He has been in the
immigration detention center in Batavia for about two weeks, Martinez
said. When investigators questioned him further, Cardenas
purportedly confessed to killing Katherine and told them where he buried
her body, Martinez said."He stated to them that he raped Katherine," Martinez said. "Then Katherine told him she was going to tell Kimberly."That's when he lost it," Martinez said. "He grabbed her and choked her. She fell to the ground and hit her head on the table."Katherine apparently was still alive when, Martinez said, Cardenas dragged her into the basement.Police are waiting for autopsy results to determine when and how she died.Katherine, the third of six children, attended Albion High School. Her aunt described her as a friendly girl with a nice spirit. Her mother and stepfather, Hilario, relied on her to help with chores around the house and watch her younger siblings."They
are at rest that they found her, and they don't have to worry,"
Martinez said, "but Rosa and Hilario, they are devastated."Cardenas was arraigned Friday night and is due back in Albion Town Court at 1 p.m. Thursday, police said. The
arrest followed a joint investigation by state police, the Orleans
County Major Felony Crime Task Force, Orleans County Sheriff's Office,
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Medina Police Department.http://www.buffalonews.com/city/article346833.ece

confused This has got to be one of the dumber comments I've ever heard regarding a missing person's case "They
believed she had run away, because her coat was left, and her cell
phone."
For sure, if I was running away I'd have my coat and cell phone if nothing else. And did the family delay reporting her missing because they knew Cardenas was "illegal" and didn't want to stir up any investigations about that. It's just so sad and the way the whole thing was handled does not make any sense. How especially sad for her sister.

I agree ladibug. I think it must be a misprint. Surely they meant to write "gone" instead of "left".

There were citizen reports on WIVB tonight about other crimes including arson and assault that the victims and others close to them felt that LE was not investigating or dragging their heels.
Nonetheless, I agree that the suspects unregistered alien status played a role in much of this.

Police are releasing new details about the disappearance and death of an Albion teenager.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office has positively identified
the remains of 15-year-old Katherine Sanchez. Her sister's husband,
21-year-old Carlos Cardenas was arrested Friday and charged with
second-degree murder.
“I want to express our sympathies and prayers for Katherine's
family,” said Albion Police Chief Dean London at a press conference
Sunday evening.
London confirmed what Sanchez’s family told us Saturday night -- that
Sanchez was last seen on January 14, but the family didn't report her
missing until five days later.
Sanchez’s sister, Kimberly Cardenas, explained to us, “We waited to
see if she was at a friend's house or something for her to call us.”
But by that time it was too late. Police say Carlos Cardenas
confessed to killing Sanchez after he sexually assaulted her the night
she went missing. They say the medical examiner lists the cause of
death as asphyxiation.

“From what the defendant has told us,
he killed Katie in a home here in Albion. He had placed her in the
basement of that house and moved her to the orchard several days later,”
said London.
London says the orchard is on Howlett Road in the Town of Ridgeway
and that Cardenas was recently employed there. It's a 20-minute drive
from his home on East State Street in Albion.

London also addressed why the media was not notified of Sanchez's disappearance until just hours before Cardenas was arrested.
“Because the defendant -- who was the suspect since the matter -- was
reported to us was not in custody, and our concern was that news of the
victim's disappearance would hinder our investigation,” explained
London.
London says Cardenas was potentially a flight risk. All that time,
his wife and the victim's sister, says she was living with a man who had
a side she never knew of.
“He was moving on with his life as if no one was going to find her.
He was already in his mind that no one was going to find her,” said
Kimberly Cardenas.
Sanchez’s family told us Saturday that Cardenas confessed to the
crime after he was arrested for drunk driving. But Chief London says he
has no knowledge of that. What we do know is Border Patrol took
Cardenas into custody last week for being an illegal immigrant days
before he was arrested for this crime.
Cardenas is in the Orleans County Jail without bail. He's scheduled to be back in Albion Town Court on Thursday.
The Albion Central School District is holding counseling sessions Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Grief counselors have been talking to students in Albion touched by
the shocking death of Katherine Sanchez. Loved ones have been
questioning the handling of this case. There are many questions
surrounding the death of 15-year-old Katherine Sanchez, but the one that
won't seem to go away: why did authorities wait so long to ask for the
public's help finding Katherine, when she was missing for more than a
month? Albion school officials opened the doors at the high
school for students needing help to meet with grief counselors, or just
talk to each other, about the murder of Katherine Sanchez, a popular,
well-loved sophomore at D'Amico High.

Related stories: >> Funeral arrangements for Katherine Sanchez
>> Questions still surround the murder of Sanchez
>> Family members say Cardenas showed no sign of being involved

Principal
Leslie Stauss said, "They just want to be with somebody to reminisce,
to go back through some memories, and how do they deal with something so
horrific." Stauss said Katherine Sanchez was an outstanding student, athlete, and leader who spent hours after school helping out. "Anybody
she could touch their heart and be involved in their life, she would do
that. Her love was education, she wanted to be a teacher, she made no
qualms about that," said Stauss. Katherine was missing for more
than a month and school officials said that students and teachers could
sense there was something terribly wrong. Katherine was last seen alive
on January 14th, babysitting for her sister Kimberly and brother-in-law,
Carlos Cardenas. Police say Cardenas killed the teenager and buried her
in a shallow grave in an apple orchard where he worked in the town of
Ridgeway. Family members told News 4 Cardenas raped Katherine and killed
her after she told Cardenas she was going to tell her sister. Kimberly Cardenas said, "He is just one psycho, psycho man that I never knew that side." But
family members are still asking why, when they reported Katherine
missing back on January 14th, police did not even ask for the public's
help until last week after they say Cardenas had already confessed. Katherine's
aunt, Aster Martinez, said, "Her mother, Rosa, says that she told them
about the blood in the basement and they completely ignored her." But police insist they have been working on Katherine's disappearance from day one. Albion
Police Chief Dean London said, "We were in the middle of investigating
and trying to locate her and at that time, when we put the information
out, we were trying to obtain more information." Now a community is trying to understand how someone so young and vibrant could so suddenly and violently be taken away. Albion
Schools Superintendent Mike Bonnewell said, "A classmate, teammate,
club partner. It's just as tough for adults. Teachers have lost a
student that they thought a great deal of." Authorities say
Carlos Cardenas, a Mexican national, is in this country illegally and
was taken into custody two weeks ago. He is charged with second degree
murder and is being held without bail until his next court appearance on
Thursday afternoon. A memorial page has been set up for Katherine Sanchez on Facebook.
