"Baby John" SCHNEIDER-NIRENBERG - xx age - Brookline (W Boston) MA

The Office of the Child Advocate is investigating the Department of
Children and Families’ brief history with a young Brookline couple who
were banned from seeing their horrifically abused baby boy after he
turned up in a hospital last week with seven broken bones.
The infant suffered fractures to his right thigh bone, left arm,
shoulder blade, left foot, a toe and two fingers, authorities said.
His parents, Rebecca Schneider, 20, and James Nirenberg, 21, have
been charged with assault and battery and reckless endangerment,
according to police reports filed at Brookline District Court.
The baby, whose maternal grandmother is a pediatric surgeon in
Chicago, became the focus of a DCF probe just three days after he was
born, when Schneider tested positive for marijuana and admitted to
authorities she’d eaten a brownie laced with pot at a party, the reports state.
DCF would not comment on the case or discuss the findings of its
initial investigation. A judge barred the couple from seeing the baby
after their arraignment last week. Court papers did not say who has custody of the baby.
Efforts to reach the couple and their attorneys for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.
Gail Garinger, the state’s child advocate, “is aware of this baby’s
injuries and is reviewing DCF involvement with this family,” OCA
spokeswoman Elizabeth Armstrong told the Herald.
The parents were released on $5,000 cash bail apiece after pleading
not guilty last Friday to the abuse charges. They are due back in court
April 11 for a pre-trial hearing.
