Pittsburgh Woman Missing; Beau Not 'Cooperating'

By Associated Press Writer
| (AP)
Published: March 29, 2011

PITTSBURGH --

(AP) Allegheny County police say a missing Pittsburgh woman's boyfriend
isn't cooperating with her family's attempts to find her.
Police
called a news conference Tuesday to drum up attention to the case of
Alivia Christine Kail, a 19-year-old woman who last lived in the city's
Mount Washington neighborhood.
Police say she
told family and friends she was headed to Florida with her boyfriend
and was last seen when she stopped at her brother's home in West
Mifflin to pick up some clothes for the trip on March 5.
Now, police say, they don't know if Kail even made the trip.
Police
aren't identifying her boyfriend and have stopped short of calling him
a "suspect" or even a "person of interest" in her disappearance. But
police say they do hope the man cooperates in their efforts to find
Kail.

Boyfriend of missing woman faces trial on drug charges
Tuesday, April 05, 2011

An Esplen man police want to question about the disappearance of his girlfriend last month was held for trial today on drug and stolen property charges.

District Judge Nathan N. Firestone also reduced bond for Alexander P. Lorenzi, 22, to $100,000 from $250,000.

Mr. Lorenzi's attorney, Douglas Sughrue argued that the original bond was punitive since his client works, has ties to the community and has only a minor criminal record.

During the hearing in City Court, attorneys and Allegheny County Police detectives danced around the issue of Mr. Alexander's missing girlfriend, Alivia Kail, and did not mention her by name or in the context of the investigation into her whereabouts.

One county detective, however, Steven Dish, alluded to the search when he testified about a search warrant that was executed at Mr. Lorenzi's Oregon Street residence: "For the items we were looking for, we would normally look anywhere in the residence."

Police searching the house said they found small amounts of marijuana and cocaine, drug-packaging paraphernalia and a handgun that was stolen from a Bethel Park home.

Mr. Lorenzi was held on charges of receiving stolen property possession of drugs with intent to deliver and drug possession.

Ms. Kail, 19, of Mount Washington, was last seen March 4 by one of her brothers as she was packing her bags to travel to Florida with Mr. Lorenzi.

Missing woman's clothes found in boyfriend's truck

Allegheny County police officers found a bag of clothes belonging to missing teenager Alivia Kail in a pickup parked inside her boyfriend's garage, along with three spent shell casings, a detective told a judge on Tuesday.
County Detective Daniel Mayer told the judge that police found a pink tote bag filled with woman's clothes in the truck along with a cooler loaded with ice, sandwiches and other food in the garage of Alexander Lorenzi, 22. Kail's mother later identified the clothes as her daughter's.
Police found two 9 mm shell casings in a vacuum in the garage and a .22-caliber casing on the garage floor, according to the search warrants.
Police have served at least five search warrants targeting Lorenzi of the West End while they investigate Kail's disappearance. Kail, 19, was last seen by her family on March 5 leaving her brother's home in West Mifflin, where she picked up some clothes and said she was planning to go to Florida with Lorenzi.
Mayer testified that he believes Lorenzi has information about Kail that he is not sharing with police and that it appeared he was preparing to leave for somewhere when police found the truck.
Lorenzi's attorney, Douglas Sughrue, disputed that his client is not cooperating with police and said he has provided information to investigators. He declined to elaborate or comment about the clothes or shell casings. He said his client does not know where Kail is.
"We don't know who used the Shop Vac for what reason," Sughrue said. "I provided information to police about flights to Florida."
Sughrue said the evidence in the truck could be interpreted as someone returning from a trip.
"There's no reason for him to flee anywhere," he said.
The search of the pickup also turned up earrings, fishnet stockings, a white sheet with a possible bloodstain and a Feb. 27 plane ticket from Pittsburgh to Ft. Myers, according to a search warrant.
Mayer's testimony was made during a bail hearing for Lorenzi. Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning kept the bail at $100,000 and ordered electronic monitoring if Lorenzi gets out of jail. Assistant District Attorney R. Bruce Linsenmayer sought a higher bail while detectives continue the investigation.
When police searched Lorenzi's home, they said they found guns, bags of suspected marijuana and suspected cocaine, evidence of drug packaging and records of drug sales. They charged him last week with three drug offenses and one count of receiving stolen property. A district judge, after a preliminary hearing yesterday, ordered him to stand trial on those charges.

Police search garage of missing girl's boyfriend

Judge refuses to increase bond for boyfriend of missing Mount Washington woman

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

As police scoured Alexander P. Lorenzi's garage in Esplen last week
for signs of his girlfriend, they found shell casings, her pink tote and
a sheet with a possible blood stain, according to a search warrant made
public Tuesday.

Alivia Kail

Neither police nor prosecutors would say what they believe those
items have to do with Alivia Kail, 19, of Mount Washington, who has been
missing for more than a month.

But they tried unsuccessfully to argue before a judge Tuesday
afternoon that the investigation, as well as fear that Mr. Lorenzi might
flee, was reason enough to boost his bond on an unrelated drug case.

Ms. Kail was last seen March 4 as she packed to go to Florida with
Mr. Lorenzi, who returned to Pittsburgh alone March 16. Three days
later, Ms. Kail's family reported her missing.

Police executed at least three search warrants between March 30 and April 1 as they sought information about Ms. Kail.

They searched Mr. Lorenzi's Oregon Street residence and found marijuana, cocaine and a stolen gun.

Narcotics detectives returned with a second warrant for a more
thorough search of the house and a pickup truck in the garage belonging
to Mr. Lorenzi's father's company, Raymond Paul Lorenzi Excavating.

An affidavit for the truck indicates police found a shell casing from
a .22-caliber pistol on the floor near the vehicle and two 9 mm casings
inside a Shop-Vac. They also took a jewelry box with earrings, a Feb.
27 plane ticket to Fort Myers, Fla., and an airline gate pass for the
same day.

In addition, according to testimony Tuesday before Allegheny Common
Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning, police seized a .22-caliber pistol,
reported stolen from a home in Bethel Park, as well as a 9 mm pistol and
what Allegheny County Detective Daniel Mayer described as an assault
weapon.

"He's allowed to possess guns and firearms. The Second Amendment
allows him to do that," said Mr. Lorenzi's attorney, Douglas Sughrue.

Inside the pickup, Detective Mayer said police found a cooler of
food, the tote bag belonging to Ms. Kail and neatly folded clothing.

On Tuesday morning, District Judge Nathan Firestone ordered Mr.
Lorenzi held for trial on drug and stolen-property charges at a
preliminary hearing in City Court

Judge Firestone reduced Mr. Lorenzi's bond to $100,000 from $250,000
after Mr. Sughrue argued that the higher amount was punitive.

The district attorney's office objected, prompting a bail hearing before Judge Manning.

Family Of Missing Teen's Boyfriend Work To Release Him From Jail

Posted: 4:31 pm EDT April 13, 2011Updated: 4:54 pm EDT April 13, 2011PITTSBURGH --
The boyfriend of a missing West Mifflin teenager, who was last seen on
March 5, may soon be released from jail, according to Channel 11's Alan
Jennings.Alivia Christine Kail, 19, told her family and friends
she was headed to Florida with her boyfriend and was last seen when she
stopped at her brother's home to pick up some clothes for the trip.Kail's
boyfriend, Alex Lorenzi, 22, was arrested last month on unrelated gun
and drug charges. Investigators believe he's not telling everything he
knows about Kail's disappearance. Police also said some of Kail's
clothing was found in Lorenzi's truck.Jennings has learned that
Lorenzi's family is exploring ways to bail him out of jail. Sources
close to the investigation told Jennings that his family is ready to use
$100,000 in property to free him.Although Lorenzi has not been formally charged in Kail's disappearance, Kail's mother doesn't think he should be freed."To make bond, I'm not real good with that. I'm not good with that," said Chris DiDiano.DiDiano
said Lorenzi was the last person to see her daughter before she went
missing five weeks ago. If Lorenzi is let out of jail, she said a court
ordered electronic bracelet would be meaningless."If he gets out
of the Allegheny County jail and he gets that ankle bracelet put on, to
the best of my knowledge, my belief, he's going to take that off and
he's going to run," DiDiano said.DiDiano said she believes that Lorenzi knows something or was involved in her daughter's disappearance."From
that day on, not to hear from her, this isn't normal. This doesn't
happen. She's gone somewhere. I want my daughter back," said DiDiano.

30th August, 2011
PITTSBURGH --
Police say evidence in
the case against a Pittsburgh officer facing charges that he helped run a
call-girl service may provide a clue to the disappearance of a Mount
Washington woman.Officer Michael Johns is accused of giving drugs
to prostitutes and providing vehicles to help conduct a prostitution
ring. He is also accused of helping to operate an Internet site
promoting the women's services.
Accused cop speaks briefly

When asked if he had anything to say about the charges Monday
night, the 16-year police veteran told Channel 4 Action News reporter
Ari Hait, "I have no comment, other than my attorney is Lee Rothman.
You can contact him for a statement."When Channel 4 Action News
reporter Shannon Perrine tried to reach Rothman for a comment, she
learned that Johns is now being represented by Jim Ecker and Phil
DiLucente, both of whom told her that Johns is innocent and that it will
be explained when he has a preliminary hearing on Sept. 9.The
Pittsburgh Police Bureau said Johns faces charges of promoting
prostitution, drug possession with intent to deliver, criminal
conspiracy, insurance fraud and false reports. Chief Nate Harper has no
comment during the ongoing investigation, which will be handled by
Allegheny County Police.Police said Johns was assigned to the
warrant office after he became known as a person of interest in the
investigation, and he's now off work with pay while his criminal charges
are pending.
Alivia Kail

Channel 4 Action News' Janelle Hall reported that police reports
say they found a possible clue in the case of a missing woman while
they were investigating Johns' case.Alivia Kail, 20, was last seen March 5 and was reported missing by her brother."Right
now, to me, it's a break to have her name out there," said Kail's
mother, Christine Didiano. "Something that's so little right now could
be so big."Investigators say they found a key chain with Kail's name on it inside one of the vehicles that Johns allegedly rented out."I
have nothing to do with a key chain, know nothing about a key chain and
we see know nothing and nobody knows anything about a key chain," Ecker
said.
Mom Speaks About Missing Daughter

"Our client has never met, spoken with, would even know what she
would look like, and we have spoken to him, so clearly he has nothing to
do with this woman," DiLucente said.Johns has not been charged in connection with Kail's disappearance. Police have not said that he is a suspect in her case.Kail's
mother and others have long looked at the woman's then-boyfriend, Alex
Lorenzi, as having something to do with her disappearance, but Lorenzi's
lawyer, Doug Sughrue, said the man should not be connected to it."It's
nice to know the police officers are continuing their investigation on
the disappearance of Alivia Kail, and hopefully it'll lead them away
from my client and onto any real leads," Sughrue said.Didiano said she just hopes that the new evidence may bring her daughter home."Just bring her back. Just give her back to us," Didiano said."That's all I want."Kail
is described as white, 5 feet 1 inch tall, 110 pounds, with green eyes,
a pierced lip and nose, and sandy-colored hair that she often changes.
Anyone who sees her or knows her whereabouts is asked to call police at
412-473-1251. Callers may remain anonymous.

Missing Woman’s Family, Friends Hold Candlelight Vigil In Brookline

March 4, 2012 11:08 PM

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s been one year since a local woman disappeared, and her family continues to hold out hope that she’ll be found alive.

Alivia Kail has been missing since March of 2011 when she told her family she was going on a trip; she hasn’t been heard from since.

One year later, Kail’s friends and family gathered on a cold, snowy Sunday night in Brookline to mark the anniversary since anyone has seen or heard from her.

“Throughout this whole entire year, you know, it’s been very heartbreaking for my family,” said Christine DiDiano, Kail’s mother.

DiDiano has never give up hope that eventually there would be word of her daughter who vanished without a trace after a trip to Florida with a male companion.

But she realizes a year is a long time to go without a trace.

“The greatest miracle would be that Alivia would still come back,” she said.

The male companion has been identified as Alex Lorenzi. He was questioned by police, but never charged in the case.

On Sunday evening, his mother stood outside of the vigil frustrated that her son’s name has been associated with the case, but never charged.

“My son is always being connected with this when my son has never been charged, never been arrested, nothing whatsoever to do with this,” said Genie Lorenzi.

Two mothers seeking closures in a case that’s gone on for 12 months. One seeking justice for her son who she says was unjustly accused, and he other seeking closure for a daughter who is gone but not forgotten.

“I’m kind of wondering why now, at this vigil, that you decided to take the opportunity to come speak with me,” said DiDiano.

“I did not come here to speak with you; I came to speak with the news. And I did not come inside there; I did not interrupt any of your thing,” Lorenzi said. “I did not come here to start any trouble. I came here to speak with them. I did not want to interrupt anything that you are having for your daughter.”

The case remains open. Kail’s family members are hoping the vigil will prompted someone to come forward with information that will help them resolve the case.

PITTSBURGH —
The ex-boyfriend of a missing Pittsburgh-area teen was in court Tuesday on drunken driving charges.
Alexander
Lorenzi was in court for a preliminary hearing and all of his charges
were waived to court. The charges are not related to his ex-girlfriend’s
disappearance.
Alivia Kail was 19 when she disappeared a little
more than a year ago. Police said Lorenzi was the last one to see Kail
alive in West Mifflin before she disappeared last March.
Lorenzi
was questioned by police after her disappearance and officials said they
can’t comment if his name has been cleared or if he’s still part of the
open and ongoing investigation.
Lorenzi is also part of another
investigation for simple assault, officials said. Lorenzi is accused of
getting into a fight at a bar on the Southside Saturday morning. The
case is under investigation.
