Teen Shot to Death in North Wichita

Before 1:00 a.m. Sunday, 17-year-old Tyree Bell and his 17-year-old girlfriend
were shot in north Wichita, south of 21st & Grove; both victims
were in the bedroom of a residence in the 2500 block of E. Shadybrook.

Police Lt. Ken Landwehr says one bullet was fired from a rifle, hitting
Bell in the head and killing him, and wounding the girl in her hand and
shoulder. The rifle was left on the scene.

Police believe the suspect is the girl's 15-year-old brother; he's a
gang-member who had been issued a weekend pass from the Wichita
Children's Home. He was arrested late Sunday evening near Broadway &
Murdock, then booked into the Juvenile Intake Assessment Center for
1st-degree murder and aggravated battery.

This is Wichita's eighth murder of the year.

Easter Homicide victim identified, accused killer in custody

(WICHITA, Kan.)—

Wichita police identified the victim of a deadly shooting early Easter morning. Tyree Bell, 17, was shot once in the head with a rifle, Lt. Ken Landwehr said. The shooting happened around one o'clock Sunday morning in the 2500 block of E. Shadybrook in Northeast Wichita.

A 15 year-old registered gang member, fired the rifle once, after seeing his sister in bed with Bell. He was "upset over the fact that they were together, having relations" Landwehr said.

The 17 year-old sister was shot in the hand and shoulder by the same bullet that killed Bell. She was in serious condition, but expected to survive, according to police.

A Wichita police officer spotted the suspect about 20 hours later and arrested him. He's currently in the juvenile detention center, awaiting charges.

The accused gunman and his sister were in the protective custody of the state, and had been granted weekend releases, Landwehr said.
