ADRIANA HERNANDEZ - 21 Months (5/2011) - Glenpool/ Tulsa OK
GLENPOOL, Okla. -- Glenpool police have taken two people into custody after a 1-year-old baby was killed.
Around 5:50 a.m. Wednesday police were called to the 700 block of East 147th
Street in Glenpool after David Eugene Bridgeman, 28, and Paula Najar
called 911. Police found the 1-year-old not breathing and attempted
CPR, but could not revive her. An EMS Plus ambulance crew also failed
to restore breathing, and pronounced her dead a few minutes after 6:00
a.m.
Glenpool police say Bridgeman and Najar were taking care
of Bridgeman's brother's two kids: Adriana and a little boy. Police say
the couple was trying to potty train Adriana, but Bridgeman apparently
got frustrated and ended up killing her.
Others who live in their quiet Glenpool neighborhood say they never imagined something like this could happen so close to home.
"Really surprising and kind of crazy," Bridgeman's next door neighbor, Tawni
Davis, said. "You see it on the news all the time, all these stories
about crazy people doing really crazy things. And you never think it's
gonna be your next door neighbor."
Davis has a 4-month-old daughter, and a 3-year-old nephew, and says she's outraged somebody
could do something like this to a baby.
"I love my baby and I love my nephew, and I couldn't imagine them getting hurt or anything like that," Davis said.
Police say Bridgeman confessed to getting rough with Baby Adriana.
"He had struck the child several times, threw her across the room, and
actually thrown her down on the floor," Glenpool Police Chief Dennis
Waller said.
Najar also confessed to spanking the child before Bridgeman took deadly action.
Bridgeman told police that Adriana had trouble getting up after he threw her
down, so he put her in her bed. He claims to have checked on her
multiple times throughout the night, but by a little after 5:30
Wednesday morning Adriana was no longer breathing and was unresponsive.
"She was a cute little girl, normal little girl," Davis said. "So I just
don't understand how she could have been that terrible of a baby to make
somebody want to do something like that to her."
"It's unnecessary," Ken Lee, another of Bridgeman's neighbors, said. "I mean,
just walk away. If you get frustrated just walk away."
Lee says he can't get over the shock of this happening in his neighborhood.
"I've got a 16-month-old granddaughter, and it just breaks your heart when
you hear something like this," he said. "It's a tragedy. It just goes to
show it can happen anywhere, any neighborhood, any people."
Bridgeman now faces a murder charge, and Davis says that's exactly what he deserves.
"Even if it was an accident, which I don't understand how that could ever be
accident, he killed a baby," Davis said. "So I feel like that's a good
charge for him. I hope he goes away for a long time."
Police say there were a total of four children in the home at the time of the
incident: Adriana, her brother, a child Najar had from a previous
relationship, and a child Bridgeman and Najar have together. Police say
the Oklahoma Department of Human Services took custody of the three
remaining children.
Adriana's parents, identified as Guadalupe
Hernandez and Jennifer Rodriguez, live in New Mexico. Chief Waller says
the couple had been notified, and was traveling to Tulsa.
Police say it was impossible for Najar to not have known what Bridgeman was
doing to the baby, and that's why she could be charged with child
neglect.
Neither Bridgeman nor Najar had any violent criminal history in Tulsa County.

A Glenpool couple goes to court Monday to face charges for what prosecutors say was a deadly case of child abuse.
David Eugene Bridgeman is charged with child abuse murder and child neglect.

His fiancee, Paula Najar, is accused of permitting the child abuse and neglect of 21-month-old Adriana Hernandez.
Hernandez was found dead at a Glenpool home last May.
Bridgeman and Najar say they were trying to potty train Hernandez when he lost control and threw the toddler accross the room.
She died from her injuries.

Re: ADRIANA HERNANDEZ - 21 Months (5/2011) - Glenpool/ Tulsa OK
A Tulsa County jury has recommended life in prison without the
possibility parole for a man it convicted of child-abuse murder in the
death of his niece in Glenpool.
The panel also found David Bridgeman guilty Friday of child neglect in
the May death of 21-month-old Adriana Hernandez and recommended life
with parole.
According to a story in Saturday’s Tulsa World (), the Oklahoma Medical
Examiner’s Office reported that Adriana’s death was caused by multiple
blunt force injuries.
According to an affidavit, Bridgeman became angry while he was trying
to “potty train” Adriana. He allegedly struck the child and threw her
across the room and onto the floor.
Bridgeman’s attorney, Everett Bennett, didn’t immediately return a message left Saturday seeking comment.
His co-defendant, Paula Najar, pleaded guilty to child neglect.
