Sandy Cannon of Southaven, Mississippi could not believe the charges against a neighbor known on the block as "Ben."
"It just doesn't sound right," said Cannon. "Cause it's a good family, they're good people."
Memphis Police charged 25-year-old Benjamin Wruk Thursday with aggravated statutory rape involving a 14-year-old girl.
Police said she had sex with Wruk and an adult
woman at the Knight's Inn near Memphis International after drinking beer
and other alcohol.
They said the girl was brought to Memphis by the
woman, who is a neighbor, from the tiny town of Swifton, Arkansas,
located about 24 miles west of Jonesboro.
According to court records, the teen was told she was coming to Memphis to visit the zoo and to go shopping.
Apparently, she never got to see the animals inside the zoo and was instead taken straight to the motel.
That is when police said the woman contacted Wruk who later met them there.
"If someone was underage, probably he thought she was over age," said Cannon.
Police said that is what Wruk told them after he
admitted to having sex with both the girl and the adult woman who
brought her to Memphis.
Police consider the adult woman a suspect. They said she is wanted for questioning.
At last check, Wruk remained locked up on a $50,000 bond.
