ANDREW SLYTER - 3 yo (2007) - Old Lyme CT

Marta Aberg of Lisbon wondered aloud how 40 years in prison as
punishment for the murder of her 3-year-old grandson measured up against
a lifetime of pain and suffering for her family.

It was a familiar theme Wednesday in an emotionally-charged New London
courtroom where 39-year-old Craig Sadosky of Old Lyme was sentenced to
40 years in prison for the 2007 murder of his girlfriend’s son,
3-year-old Andrew Slyter.

“Our grandson is dead,” Aberg said through tears. “Losing him to
illness or accident would have been a crippling blow. But Andrew was
stolen out of his bed and murdered. Craig Sadosky murdered our Andy,
savaged him, brutalized him, cruelly beat him, sodomized him.”

“Put yourself in the mind of our precious little boy,” she said. “He
would have been terrified. He would have cried for his momma, his
poppa.”

Aberg was one of numerous family members to talk about the seemingly
always smiling child, Andrew’s mother, Sarah Slyter, said she had grown
used to her son crawling into bed with her and whispering “Momma, guess
what? I has a secret,” and then proceed to tell her it was his
“birfday.”

Sarah and her son were staying with Sadosky in Old Lyme when on the
morning of Nov. 19, 2007 when she said she awoke to find Sadosky’s dog
locked in the bedroom with her. She said she proceeded to the dryer to
find her son’s clothes for the next day at school, but instead found his
pajamas.

It was in the bathroom that Sarah Slyter said she found Sadosky and her
son, who was lying face down on the floor in his underwear. He was
unresponsive.

At first claiming the boy’s injuries were due to a fall, Sadosky later
claimed he had “snapped,” beating the child after he became angry when
the boy kept falling during a walk to catch the sunrise. Sadosky
admitted throwing the child down an embankment, punching and kicking him
and holding him by the neck.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt traumatic head injury.

None of the family appeared to believe Sadosky’s explanation.

“There is no explanation, no rationale for his death,” offered state
prosecutor Lawrence Tytla. “I don’t think there can be an explanation.
It’s inevitable that you try to make sense of the senseless.”

Andrew Slyter was described by his grandfather, John Aberg of Lisbon,
as full of life, curious and trusting. With photographs of Andrew
propped against the judge’s bench, Aberg talked about the good memories -
how Andrew liked to mimic the voice at the automated check-out machine
at Stop & Shop, or how he used flashlight to help his grandfather
work under the kitchen sink.

“He thought it was funny that I used my belly as a tray for the tools,” Aberg said.

Sadosky sat quietly through the proceedings.
