An Amber Alert has been issued out of Detroit on Sunday night for a missing 5-year-old girl. Police there say that 5-year-old Mariha Trenice Smith is missing and is in danger. Smith was last seen sleeping on the floor at her mother's house in Detroit at about 3 a.m. Sunday.



She was reported missing at about 12 p.m. Sunday when her mother noticed the girl was gone and a front window was left open. Police say Smith may have been abducted from the family home during the night. The little girl is about 3'5" and weighs about 40 pounds. She has black hair and dark eyes, and was last seen wearing a black t-shirt with pink flowers on it and blue jeans. If

DETROIT, MI (WTOL) - An amber alert has been issued out of Detroit for 5-year-old Mariha Ternice Smith.

She was last seen Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m.

Mariha is African American with black hair and black eyes. She was last wearing blue jeans with a black dress shirt that has pink flowers on it.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Detroit's FBI office at 313-965-2323.

The child's mother last saw her sleeping on the floor of their Burlingame Street home in Detroit at 3:30 a.m. At noon on Sunday, she realized the child was missing and called police. The mother also says she noticed the front window was open.

This is being investigated as an alleged abduction.

The charred remains of a young child were found Sunday within hours
of a report of a missing 5-year-old girl who disappeared approximately
one mile from the horrific discovery. Detroit Police right now
are saying they do not have evidence to link the incidents. The missing
case and the body found are being investigated separately.
The
day’s events began to unfold at 8 a.m. Sunday when firefighters got the
call to a house fully engulfed on Waverly. After dousing the blaze, the
body of a child was pulled from the ruins. Police are calling the fire
arson. The child’s body was burned so severely a DPD spokeswoman says
investigators are awaiting a report from the medical examiner to
determine the gender and cause of death. The report is expected to be
released Monday.
Just about a mile from the scene of the fire on
Waverly a 911 call came in to report a missing child from a home on
Burlingame. Police issued an Amber Alert and believe 5-year-old Mariha
Smith was abducted.
Action News spoke with family members who say
the little girl was snatched from the living room where she slept.
We’re told a fan placed in an open window was pushed out of the way as
the kidnapper grabbed her from the home.
The family says Mariha was last seen before her mother and other relatives went to bed.
The
family of the missing girl says they believe the abduction was in
connection with a feud the little girl’s mother was having with another
man.
Mariha Trenice Smith is 3'5" and weighs 40 pounds. She has black hair and was last seen wearing a black shirt with pink flowers.

investigators work to identify the body of a child found at a fire in
an abandoned Detroit house, the search continues for a 5-year-old girl
who has gone missing.Wayne County spokesman Dennis Niemiec said
the body is a girl's, between 5 and 7 years old. He said her identity
would be determined through DNA testing. An autopsy determined that she
died of asphyxia and her death has been ruled a homicide.Niemiec said the girl's skull also was crushed.

Sunday morning's fire at the two-family flat was being investigated as arson.
Meanwhile, Detroit police are continuing their search for 5-year-old
Mariha Trenice Smith. Mariha was reported missing from her home Sunday
by her mother.Adults in the home said they were holding a party
at the family's home on Detroit's west side Saturday night. Sometime
after 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, someone in the home realized she was
gone."Hopefully they get up on their job and find my daughter, because I know she's alive," said Smith's mother, Konesha.Konesha Smith agreed to a polygraph test and was released after.An Amber Alert was issued Sunday afternoon for the 5-year-old.The homes are just over a mile apart.

Child’s body found in burnt building may be Mariha Trenice Smith

Detroit resident Konesha Smith reported her daughter missing the same day remains were discovered in an abandoned house

The charred remains of a 5 to 7 year old girl was found in an
abandoned building that was set on fire on Sunday. Medical examiners
have yet to determine if the body is that of missing 5 year-old Mariha
Trenice Smith.

The cause of death for the child in the fire was ruled a homicide by
asphyxiation. Their were also other injuries according to the Wayne
County Medical Examiner’s Office. ”Her skull was crushed and she was
burned, but the cause of death was asphyxiation,” said the office
spokesman Dennis Niemiec. “Whatever killed her occurred before the
fire.”

Investigators for the Detroit Fire Department say the girl was found
at 7:55a.m in the building and appeared similar to 5-year-old Mariha
Smith. However, Niemiec said the identity of the deceased girl cannot
be established until authorities complete a DNA test, which could be
days.

Konesha Smith reported her daughter missing Sunday afternoon. Smith
thought that someone had taken her daughter between the hours of 3 a.m.
and noon Sunday while she was sleeping in the same room. The family was
staying at Ms. Smiths aunts house near West Davison and Dexter. ”The
way I’m looking at it is, someone climbed through the window and took my
daughter,” Smith told reporters as she searched the neighborhood. “I
can’t even close my eyes because my daughter’s missing.”

A young girl was spotted with unidentified man in the early morning
hours on Sunday. Authorities also discovered that, right before the
fire, a man purchased 57 cents worth of gasoline from a station on
Davison, the Detroit Free Press reported.

“At this point, we’re searching for the little girl,” Police Sgt.
Eren Stephens said. “I’m not going into details of what we’re doing, but
we are looking for the little girl.”

The missing girls mother remains hopeful, but acknowledges she may be
a suspect. ”I told them I never had anything to do with my daughter
missing,” she said. “They said they don’t understand how someone can go
over your head and take your daughter. I wish I knew! So, hopefully,
after I take a lie detector test, they’ll get up and start looking for
her. I’m praying they’ve been looking for her.”

Mother of missing Detroit girl taking DNA test

Detroit— The mother of a missing 5-year-old girl will take a DNA test today to determine if a body found in a burnt house a mile from their home is that of her daughter.

Konesha Smith, 24, had previously offered clothes from her daughter, Mariha Trenice Smith, for a DNA sample. She also will have to take a test today to help investigators determine if the body matches, Mariha's grandmother and Konesha's mother Diane Henry said this morning.

Henry did not know where or when the DNA test would happen.

Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens couldn't provide an update on the case this morning.

"It's an ongoing investigation," she said.

Smith submitted to a lie detector test Monday and spent most of the day being questioned by police.

Fire officials found the body of a 5- to 7-year-old girl around 8 a.m. Sunday after responding to a call reporting a fire in a vacant home on the 2900 block of Waverly Street. Mariha had been staying at a house about a mile away on the 3800 block of Burlingame Street and went missing between 3 a.m. and noon while her mom was sleeping on the couch.

"The Medical Examiner's Office completed the autopsy this morning and ruled the cause of death as asphyxia," county spokesman Dennis Niemiec said Monday, calling the crime a homicide. "The medical examiner determined the little girl died before the fire."

Fire Lt. Patrick McNulty said the body matched the size and weight of Mariha and the fire has been determined as arson.

A male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches, purchased 41 cents worth of gasoline at 7:47 a.m. Sunday from a BP station two blocks from the burned, two-family flat, one of the store's workers said Monday. Detroit police took the store's surveillance videos for its investigation, said the worker, who asked to not be named.

Authorities are still investigating the two crimes separately.

Missing Girl's Mom Says Relative Failed Polygraph

DETROIT -- Local 4 has learned that gunshots were fired Tuesday night outside the Detroit home where a 5-year-old girl went missing three days before.

No injuries were reported Tuesday night.

The mother of missing Mariha Trenice Smith said earlier Tuesday that her sister, the girl's aunt, had been taken into custody after failing a polygraph test.

Konesha Smith, whose daughter has been the subject of an Amber Alert since Sunday, told Local 4 on Tuesday she was informed by police that her sister, Quanita Smith, had failed a polygraph and was held.

A vigil was held Tuesday night for dozens to gather in prayer for Mariha Smith. Shots were fired during the vigil in front of the home.

Police said they are also questioning the aunt's boyfriend and another man who was seen in the house when the girl went missing.

Smith has said she thinks her daughter was kidnapped Sunday from their home on the city's west side after a family party. She has already taken a polygraph test.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Local 4 learned that a piece of black fabric with pink roses on it was found under debris where the body of a young girl was found Sunday after an arson fire in an abandoned home was put out. It has been sent to a crime lab.

According to the Amber Alert, Smith was last seen wearing a black shirt with pink roses on it.

Wayne County spokesman Dennis Niemiec said the body is that of a girl, between 5 and 7 years old. He said an autopsy determined that she had died of asphyxia and her death has been ruled a homicide.

Niemiec said the girl’s identity would be determined through a DNA analysis.

Konesha Smith was scheduled to take a DNA test for comparison to the body on Tuesday.

Police hold aunt of missing Detroit girl
She fails lie detector test; family hopeful of 5-year-old's return

Detroit — Police are holding Quanita Smith, aunt of 5-year-old Mariha Trenice Smith, after she failed a lie detector test this week during an investigation into her niece's disappearance.

Quanita spent Monday and Tuesday at a Detroit Police precinct. She is not charged.

Her family said Tuesday she should tell the police anything she knows about Mariha.

"If she knows something, she should talk," Mariha's grandmother, Diane Henry, said.

Mariha went missing between 3 a.m. and noon Sunday from Quanita's house on the 3800 block of Burlingame on the west side. Mariha's family, including her mother and three younger siblings, has been staying there for a couple of months, Henry said.

Henry said her daughter must be lying out of fear, but she didn't know the specifics of what the lie might be.

Mariha's mother, 24-year-old Konesha Smith, passed her lie detector test Monday, but Henry said Konesha admitted she was passed out, drunk, when Mariha was kidnapped. Konesha said police advised her not to talk about the investigation.

Based on stories from the family and the layout of the house, it appears the kidnapper opened a window screen, moved a box fan from the window and climbed in over the couch where Konesha lay, to take Mariha.

Many family members of the missing girl hold out hope she's alive and continued to post fliers with her picture around the neighborhood Tuesday.

The charred remains of a 5- to 7-year-old girl were found in a burned house about a mile from where Mariha went missing.

The body matched the description of Mariha, Wayne County spokesman Dennis Niemiec said Monday, citing an autopsy. Investigators are using a DNA sample from Konesha to determine if the body is Mariha's.

Michael Williams, Henry's 55-year-old boyfriend who calls Mariha his granddaughter, thinks the remains from the charred house are those of Mariha. If another child her age was missing, someone would have reported it by now, he said.

"It's just sad," he said. "When's the madness going to stop?"

A vigil for a 5-year-old Detroit girl
reported missing over the weekend was disrupted by scuffles breaking out
and the sound of gunfire.
No injuries were reported.

TV stations WDIV and WXYZ
captured the sound of multiple gunshots at the Tuesday night vigil in
Detroit for Mariha (mah-RY'-ah) Trenice.

The girl's mother Konesha
Smith told officers she last saw Mariha about 3:30 a.m. Sunday asleep at
home, and that she didn't notice her daughter was missing until about
noon.

Smith said Tuesday she believes Mariha is alive.

Authorities were
investigating the disappearance and trying to identify the charred body
of a strangled child found about 8 a.m. Sunday in a burning abandoned
Detroit building. Identification through DNA was pending, and police
haven't said whether the cases are connected.

Although the Amber Alert for Mariha Trenice Smith remains active it is likely she is the victim of a homicide.
A house fire was reported approximately a mile from where she was
abducted. Responders discovered the burned remains of a child inside the
house. It is now known the child is a female between the ages of 5 and
7. A piece of clothing found between her body and the bed she was on
matches that of Mariha.

The child in the fire died from asphyxiation and was doused with gas
then set on fire. About 10 minutes prior to the fire a man purchased 41
cents of gas at a nearby station. Police are trying to identify that
man. DNA results will be in within a few days to determine if the burned
remains are indeed those of Mariha Smith.
