EVAN GONZALEZ - 1 Month - El Monte (East LA) CA
EL MONTE - Prosecutors filed charges against an El Monte man accused of seriously injuring his one-month-old son.Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office, said Raul
Junior Gonzalez, also known as Raul Gonzalez Jr, was charged with
felony child abuse and felony corporal injury to a child.
The prosecution further alleged that the 19-year-old Gonzalez personally
inflicted great bodily injury on the infant identified in the criminal
complaint as Evan G.
Gibbons said Gonzalez's Friday arraignment at Pomona Superior Court was continued to Sept. 8.
The judge also granted the prosecution's request that bail be set at $1 million.
El Monte police said the abuse happened either Monday or Tuesday at the family home in the 3400 block of Santa Anita Avenue.
Detectives wouldn't say how the attack happened other than Gonzalez
allegedly assaulted the baby who sustained multiple injuries.
The infant was taken Tuesday night to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Doctors there called police.
Brian Greene, spokesman for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, said
federal law prevents the hospital from releasing the condition of a
minor without the consent of the parent. He said the mother declined
permission to release information about the child's condition.
However, El Monte police Lt. Richard Cassetta said the baby remains in critical condition.
Gonzalez is being held at Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles.

El Monte man faces prison for abusing baby son
Infant remains in a coma

POMONA - A 19-year-old El Monte man is heading to state prison for abusing his 7-week-old son who remains in a coma.
Raul Junior Gonzalez was supposed to be arraigned Monday at Pomona Superior Court but he pleaded no contest to felony child abuse and felony corporal injury to a child. He also admitted to the allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on his son.
El Monte Detective George Fierro said Gonzalez admitted to hitting the infant on top of the head twice while watching the child and his two stepchildren this summer.
Fierro said doctors also discovered the baby, identified in court records as Evan. G, had a broken left arm that was healing.
Deputy District Attorney Taraneh Saba said Gonzalez is looking at a possible maximum sentence of 15 years. But she pointed out that a judge will decide how much time the El Monte man will receive at his Oct. 3 sentencing.
"I have no clue what the judge will give him," Saba said.
A no - contest plea means that a defendant isn't contesting the charges but isn't pleading guilty to them either. Such a plea is recorded by the court as a conviction.
And in Gonzalez' case, he pleaded "open" to the counts which means the agreement was not part of a negotiated settlement with the District Attorney's Office. He pled to the judge.
El Monte police were notified Aug. 10 by a social worker at Children's Hospital Los Angeles about the injured baby who was transferred there from a local hospital.
Fierro said the abuse happened at least two days before at the family home in the 3400 block of Santa Anita Avenue.
The mother stepped out to do an errand and Gonzalez was taking care of his baby son and two stepchildren.
He allegedly told police the stepchildren were coming in and out of the house and were fighting while the baby was continually crying.
"He got frustrated. He struck the (baby) on top of the head with his open hand twice," Fierro said.
Gonzalez stands 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 280 pounds, according to sheriff's booking records. Fierro described him as a large man.
"I don't believe they took him to a hospital the same day," Fierro said. "I think they took him to the hospital the following day because he lost consciousness.
He said Gonzalez didn't tell them about the child's broken arm. It was the hospital that notified police.
Fierro said Gonzalez claimed he rolled over the child while lying in bed.
The baby's half siblings remain in protective custody and the mother is still under investigation, according to Fierro.

El Monte man gets 10 years for abusing his 7-week-old baby son
EL MONTE - An El Monte man will be spending the next 10 years in prison for abusing his 7-week-old son who is now in a vegetative state.
Investigators said 19-year-old Raul Junior Gonzalez hit the crying baby twice on top of the head because he got frustrated while watching the boy and his two stepchildren.
Gonzalez was sentenced Monday at Pomona Superior Court, according to Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.
He had pleaded no contest on Sept. 19 to felony child abuse and felony corporal injury to a child. He also admitted to the allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on the baby who is identified in court records as Evan G.
El Monte police were told about the injured baby on Aug. 10 by a social worker at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Detective George Fierro said Gonzalez hit the boy about a couple of days before while he watched the children at the family home in the 3400 block of Santa Anita Avenue.
The boy ended up in a coma. Authorities also found out the child had a broken left arm that was healing.
Evan G. was later transferred from Children's Hospital Los Angeles to a long-term care facility, according to Fierro.
"He's on a breathing apparatus and is in a permanent vegetative state," Fierro said.
Gonzalez pled "open" to the charges which meant he didn't make a deal with the prosecution. He plead to the judge.
