ASHTON HEDTKE - 10 Months - New Troy (Lakeshore; nr IN border) MI

A Berrien County woman has pleaded no contest to a
charge of child abuse following the death of her baby in January. Ten
month old Ashton Hedtke died when he got his head caught in a gap in his
crib, and prosecutors allege that his mother, 32 year old Angel Hedtke,
was at fault for not making sure the crib's rail was properly
installed. The New Troy woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter
and second degree child abuse, but pleaded this week to a lesser abuse
charge, and could now get four years in prison when sentenced in
October. She and her husband have three other children who are no longer
in their custody, but the Herald Palladium reports that court processes
are in motion to eventually reunify the family.
