Body of missing Spring Lake teen found in Harnett County

Two people were in custody late Thursday in the death of a Spring Lake teen whose body was found earlier in the day in woods near the Harnett County line, authorities said.
The body of Vincent Carlisle Jr., 17, of the 100 block of Carmichael Lane, was found Thursday afternoon about 100 yards into a densely wooded area along Shady Grove Road, just north of Spring Lake, investigators said. His body was being sent to the state medical examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
Authorities confirmed that two people were being held without bail at the Harnett County jail on first-degree murder charges Thursday night. Their names were not released.
Debbie Tanna, a spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, said the slaying appeared to have taken place in Harnett County, and deputies there were taking over the investigation.
Repeated calls seeking comment from Sheriff Larry Rollins and other officials in Harnett County were not returned.
Carlisle would have been a senior at Johnathan's House Christian Academy in Fuquay-Varina. He loved playing basketball and talked about going to college when he graduated, said his uncle, Clarence Gaddy. He described Carlisle as outgoing, friendly and easy to get along with.
"He loved everybody and everybody loved him," Gaddy said. "He didn't meet no strangers."
Carlisle's friend, 18-year-old Brian Ritchey, said they last saw each other Saturday, when they did what Carlisle loved to do: play basketball.
"He played basketball, liked to go party, have fun, dance, talking to females, hanging out with the fellas," Ritchey said.
Family members said they last heard from Carlisle about 10 p.m. Sunday when he left the house, possibly to meet some friends. Everything at the time seemed fine.
But then Carlisle vanished. He hadn't logged on to his Facebook page since Sunday afternoon. Calls to his cellphone were going straight to voice mail, family members said.
Family members suspected earlier in the week that something had gone wrong.
"We heard he had a scuffle with someone," Gaddy said.
Authorities on Wednesday announced a multi-county search for Carlisle, although they didn't release details about the case, including whether they believed Carlisle was in danger.
As the search progressed, friends and family members came together at Carlisle's home on Carmichael Lane, a quiet dead-end street off North Bragg Boulevard, waiting anxiously for word while investigators searched woods along the Cumberland-Harnett county line.
Some, like 18-year-old Brian Ritchey, went out on their own, searching through the woods for their lost friend. Then late Thursday afternoon, a couple of deputies pulled up to the house with the worst kind of news, but few answers.
"That's where the unanswered questions are coming in: What happened? What brought this on? Right now it's just a big hole that we're trying to deal with," Gaddy said. "It's hard, but at the same time it's a relief now that we can get closure. The healing process can start."
Friends and family members stood outside Carlisle's house Thursday afternoon, talking in muted voices, as they digested what had happened to Carlisle.
"It's surprising when it's somebody you hang around with. Like right now, he would be right here with us if it was somebody else," said friend Sumari Lilly, 18. "He was a good person. He shouldn't have went out like that."

Two
Fort Bragg soldiers were charged with first-degree murder after a
teenager's body was found dumped in woods near his hometown, authorities
said Friday.

Army Pvt. Sebastian Gamez, 20, of Hidalgo, Texas, and Spc. Christopher Blackett,
20, of Vista, Calif., were each charged with first-degree murder and
disposing of a corpse, the Harnett County Sheriff's Office said in
a statement.
Both
men lived at the same Spring Lake address and were being held without
bond at the county's jail, the sheriff's office said. Spring Lake is a
town of about 8,000 residents less than five miles from Fort Bragg.
Both paratroopers worked as truck drivers and are members of Alpha Company, 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne spokesman Staff Sgt. Andrew Alfano said.

The body of Vincent Carlisle
Jr., 17, was found Thursday afternoon, almost four days after he left
his home Sunday night, family members said. Blackett and Gamez had moved
in next door about six months ago and had played basketball with
Carlisle on occasions.
"The
guys were friends with the family over here and so we don't know what
happened, what transpired between Sunday and today," Carlisle's uncle Clarence Gaddy told The Fayetteville Observer. "This is surprising to everyone."
Carlisle had attended Overhills High School
in Spring Lake but transferred to a school about 30 miles north because
he wanted to break out of a social circle that didn't value education,
said Melanie Stewart, principal of Johnathan's House Christian School in Fuquay-Varina. Carlisle was entering his senior year of school, Stewart told WRAL-TV.
"He
knew he didn't belong with a crowd that wasn't going anywhere, but he
did not know how to break away from it either," she said. "It's
important to me that people know that Vincent Carlisle was a very
intelligent young man, and he had dreams, and he had plans."
