The RODRIGUEZ Children - Cranston/ Providence RI

A Cranston man is accused of using a power drill on his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son.
Luis
Rodriguez, 37, is charged with first-degree child abuse, and remains
under investigation on allegations of beating the boy and his 9-year-old
brother in Cranston, said Providence police Maj. Thomas F. Oates III.
The
boy’s father contacted the Providence police in mid-December, after he
saw scars on the child’s right arm, said Youth Services Detective George
Morrison. The boy and his 9-year-old brother told the father that
Rodriguez had been abusing them — while their mother was in the house,
Morrison said.
Rodriguez had lived on Ohio Avenue in Providence,
where the boys said he used the drill on the younger child, putting it
between the boy’s forearm and upper arm, Morrison said. Cranston police
are investigating allegations at Rodriguez’s new residence at 128 Garden
St.
The state Department of Children, Youth and Families also
investigated the allegations, and the children’s father was given
custody of the two boys, Morrison said.
The children were
interviewed Tuesday by Rhode Island Children’s Advocacy Center, which
works with law enforcement and children’s advocates in cases of children
who’ve been abused.
A day later, Providence and Cranston police
were at Rodriguez’s door. He attempted to flee out the back door when he
saw the police, but was captured, according to a police report.
Rodriguez was arraigned Thursday at District Court, Providence, and held on surety bail.
The
Cranston police special-victims unit is working with Providence police
on the investigation, said Cranston Police Maj. Robert Ryan. “The
investigation is pending and charges may be forthcoming,” he said.
