"Infant" OLMEDO - 20 Months (2009) - Ridgecrest CA
Ridgecrest, Calif. —
A 30-year-old Ridgecrest man was sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with a 2009 child-abuse case.
According to Kern County Superior Court records, a jury found Ernie
Olmedo guilty April 6 of a single count of willful cruelty to a child.
He filed a motion for a new trial in July, but the motion was denied, and he was sentenced Aug. 19.
Ridgecrest Police officers arrested Olmedo Jan. 5, 2010 after he
brought his 20-month-old child to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital because
of head injuries sustained to the infant while preparing the child for a
bath.
The department responded to the location and the initial investigation
was inconclusive due to the statements of the child’s parents and the
attending emergency room staff. The child was subsequently airlifted to
Loma Linda Medical University Hospital.
At Loma Linda, the child was examined and treated by physicians with
extensive training and experience in child injury and abuse cases. These
physicians determined the injuries sustained by the victim were a
result of intentional abuse over a period of at least several weeks.
