Police: Man admits to beating 1-year-old

San Antonio police have arrested a man they say admitted beating his girlfriend's 1-year-old son Wednesday morning at their West Side home, leaving him in critical condition.
Julio Crawford, 20, is expected to be charged with injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury, but the charge could be upgraded to capital murder if the boy dies, police said.
“I am sorry. I lost my temper. It got the best of me.” Crawford told reporters when asked why he hurt the boy.
The child was transported to Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital with a fractured skull and other injuries to his body around 8:45 a.m. from his home on Navidad Street, said Officer Matt Porter, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman. A nurse called police when she noticed the injuries “were consistent with nonaccidental child abuse,” he said.
Crawford was questioned and admitted punching the boy in the head and body, knocking him unconscious, police said.

Baby Izzy struggles to stay alive through the night

The family of Izzy Perez made plans to take Izzy off life support a little after 5 p.m. on Thursday. The family said doctors say that Izzy has numerous fractures and injuries that were healing up. Family members say Izzy’s shoulders were fractured, he had bites on his jaw, his kidneys were bashed and his brain continues to swell.
Police say Izzy Perez, a 14-month-old, was admitted unconscious and has been in critical condition since Wednesday. Investigators say that 20-year-old Julio Crawford admitted to punching the baby in the face because he would not stop crying.

Oscar Perez, Izzy’s paternal father showed both grief and anger as he was waiting at University Hospital to find out what to do next. He says he tried several times to see his son but after breaking up with the mother, Angelica Mota, he said she would not let him see her.

“I tried plenty of times but she just wouldn’t work with me,” Perez said.

Oscar cries as he looks at his son's picture. He says he can’t even recognize him. Maria Marin, Izzy’s aunt, says every time she saw Izzy he was dancing or smiling.

“ He’s a happy baby. He’s gorgeous, and the picture that we have now doesn’t even look like him,” she said.

The other three children that lived with the mother are with their paternal father, not Oscar or Julio. Oscar says the other kids have been questioned by investigators and have said they were abused as well. They didn’t want to say anything because they were afraid of Julio Crawford according to Perez. Maria says that he would threaten to tape their mouths shut.

The family said photos of the baby were being taken for evidence.

Oscar says he hopes Crawford gets what he deserves. “I hope he pays for what he did. I hope he burns in hell,” Perez said.

Perez made a plaster mold of his sons tiny hand before they take him off life support. The family is setting up an account in Izzy Perez’s name at Wood Forest National Bank for donations to help with funeral expenses if needed.

Infant police say was beaten by mom's boyfriend dies

A man could face a charge of capital murder after a 1-year-old boy whom he said he punched died at a local hospital.
The Bexar County District Attorney's office will decide whether or not to charge Julio Crawford, 20, with capital murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend's son, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman said. Crawford remains in Bexar County Jail on one count of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. A judge set bail at $100,000.
Crawford was arrested Wednesday afternoon, just hours after police were called to Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital to investigate an injured child.
Israel Perez, 1, had suffered brain swelling and a skull fracture, police said. Crawford reportedly told police he got frustrated with Israel for crying and punched him once in the face, an arrest warrant affidavit states. The impact of the blow caused Israel to lose consciousness, police said.
At some point, Israel was taken to University Hospital, where he died Friday around 5:30 p.m., according to the Bexar County medical examiner's office. The cause of his death has not yet been determined.
