Bond denied for man charged with killing Ill. boy

ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - A Cook County judge has denied bond for a 27-year-old man charged with firing into a car and killing a 5-year-old suburban Chicago boy earlier this month.

Judge Jill Cerone-Marisie ordered that Miguel Hernandez Jr. be held without bond during a hearing Saturday in Rolling Meadows.

Hernandez is charged with one count of first-degree murder in the Oct. 7 shooting death of Eric M. Galarza Jr.

The boy was riding in the car with his parents and two younger siblings when shots rang out as the vehicle was pulling out of a driveway.

Police say they believe the car was targeted and that the shooting was gang related. Officials have described Hernandez as a "known gang member."

Police Chief Jeff Swoboda says leads from the community led to Hernandez's arrest.
