ASIYAH HARTSFIELD - 20 Months - Newark NJ

NEWARK — An Essex County grand
jury has indicted a 25-year-old Newark man for murder in the beating
death of his 20-month-old daughter, authorities announced today.



Travis Hartsfield Jr. is accused of repeatedly punching his daughter,
Asiyah Hartsfield, in the head and torso on March 15, the Essex County
Prosecutor’s Office said in announcing the indictment.


Hartsfield was arrested March 16, but except for the autopsy report
listing blunt force trauma as cause of death, the full extent of her
injuries were never made public until now.


Asiyah died at University Hospital an hour after officers responded
to the early morning emergency call at Hartsfield’s Newark home.


In addition to murder, Hartsfield is also charged with endangering
the welfare of the child. He will be arraigned on the indictment Nov.
15, and remains in jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.
