A 20-year-old man was found guilty of killing his girlfriend's 9-month
old son by repeatedly smashing his head against a wall when he wouldn't
stop crying.
Jurors convicted Alexander Barnes of second-degree murder and felony child abuse resulting in death.
Prosecutors contend Barnes was
babysitting Isaiah for the first time and became angry because the baby
wouldn't stop crying.
They contend he fractured the baby's skull, killing him.
Isaiah's mother was attending a class at a nearby community college when her son received the injuries.
Isaiah was rushed to the hospital when Barnes' mother noticed the child wasn't breathing.
Doctors worked on the baby, but he was later declared dead.
Barnes' defense attorney contended that the fatal injuries could have
been sustained anytime during a 24-window prior to the child's death --
and that leaves reasonable doubt in the case.
But prosecutors said the child sustained six skull fractures at the
hands of Barnes; that there was no other way the baby could have been
injured.
Barnes is set to be sentenced in January.
He faces 25 years to life in prison.
