A Weber County woman is accused of trying to smother her 10-year-old son with a pillow on Thanksgiving night.

Tammy Hadley Crane, 38, was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted child abuse homicide. Crane called police about 2:50 a.m. and reported she had tried to kill her son while he slept in their family’s condo near 3700 South and Kenna Lane, said Weber County sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

Crane later told detectives that she had been considering killing her son and herself; she said she had a large number of pills and planned to overdose, Lowther said.

“For some reason, she decided to act on those thoughts that morning,” Lowther said. Crane said she sat on top of her son and held a pillow over his head, Lowther said. The boy awoke and asked her to stop, Lowther said.

“She just wasn’t ready to go through with it or wasn’t prepared for the act itself and decided to stop,” Lowther said.

When police arrived, the boy had a bloody nose but otherwise was not injured. He was placed in the home of a relative, Lowther said.
