Man arrested on suspicion of abusing dead 2-year-old in Monterey County

A Castroville man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of child abuse and
child endangerment, after Monterey County Sheriff's deputies found
evidence of abuse while investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl.
Deputies responded to the 11400 block of McDougal Street on reports of a child not breathing at 1:17 p.m.
They found 2-year-old Pricilla Hernandez there not breathing, and Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was taken to the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital for further
investigation, where investigators found she had injuries that suggested child abuse.
Deputies then took David Leonardo, 26, into custody on suspicion of felony child abuse and child endangerment.
Hernandez's autopsy is scheduled for Monday, after which investigators will
determine if they intend to file any additional charges.

A Castroville man now faces the possibility of a murder charge in
the death of a 2-year-old girl found dead this past weekend in her home,
the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said.
The decision to
recommend the murder charge against David Leonardo, 26, came today
following the autopsy performed on Pricilla Hernandez, the Sheriff's
Office said. The autopsy showed the girl died from serious blunt force
trauma, they said.
It will be up to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office to decide what specific charges will be filed.

A Castroville man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges alleging he murdered a 2-year-old girl.
Toddler Pricilla Hernandez was found dead in her McDougal Street home at 1:17 p.m. Saturday. An autopsy concluded she died of "serious blunt force trauma."

David Leonardo, 26, made his first appearance in court Tuesday. He is charged with murder, assault resulting in the death of a child and child endangerment causing great bodily injury or death.

At Leonardo's request, Judge Timothy Roberts appointed the Monterey County Public Defender's Office to represent him. Defender Heather Rogers pleaded not guilty on his behalf and demanded a speedy preliminary hearing, which Roberts set for Dec. 15.

Other than a traffic violation, Monterey County Superior Court records show Leonardo has a clean record in the county. He faces a sentence of 40 years to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Prosecutor Michael Breeden declined to discuss details of the case, including Leonardo's relationship to the dead girl.
He is the second man charged with murdering a child in recent months. Diego Burgos, 20, of Greenfield was ordered to stand trial Friday on duplicate charges in the death of his girlfriend's 10-month-old son, who died Sept. 5 of blunt force trauma consistent with a "high energy blow" to the head with a hard, flat surface, possibly a wall.
Breeden declined to say what type of object is believed to have been the vehicle of Pricilla's injuries.
