Police investigate the scene of a child homicide in Brooklyn.
A deranged Brooklyn mom was found cradling her bloodied child in her
arms after fatally stabbing the 3-year-old girl in the neck and the face
early Friday, police sources said.
Brandi Nwegbo,
29, described as emotionally disturbed, attacked her daughter in their
apartment on Putnam Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant shortly before 4:13 a.m.,
according to sources.
Cops were called to the four-story building when a passer-by spotted someone on the roof.
Responding officers didn't find anyone there, but followed a trail of blood to Nwegbo's apartment.
Cops found the door open and the mother holding her child, Catherine Nwegbo, covered in blood in the living room, police sources said.
The apartment was a mess and a fish tank lay broken nearby, the Associated Press reported.
The young girl was bleeding from the back of her head and had puncture wounds on her neck.
The toddler's mother had facial cuts but refused to cooperate with EMS
workers, telling them she would only trust "the white blanket,” sources
said.
Nwegbo was largely incoherent and also told officers she felt God was not helping her anymore.
Nwegbo lived alone with the toddler in a rear apartment and moved in about a year and a half ago, neighbors said.
Prior to that, one resident said Nwegbo lived at the Rose F. Kennedy
Family Center, a transitional shelter on Halsey Street in
Bedford-Stuyvesant.
"She was a beautiful little girl," a neighbor said of Catherine.
"She would have turned into a beautiful young woman. She had big, hazel eyes."
Police sealed off Nwegbo's apartment and the rooftop Friday while they searched for evidence.
A small pool of blood was visible on the sidewalk in front of the building Friday morning.
The child was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where she died.
The mother was taken to the same hospital for psychiatric evaluation, but her condition was not clear.
A spokesman for the Administration for Children's Services said an
investigation was underway but no prior abuse allegations had been made
about the infant and there was no open case.
“ACS has received a report of the terribly sad death of the [child\]
this morning in Brooklyn and is actively investigating," ACS spokesman Michael Fagin said.
“There are no other siblings in the family.”
