It's every parent's worst nightmare. What started as a report of a missing child in Walthourville ended tragically when the toddler was found dead not far from his home.

Walthourville interim Police Chief, Tracy McFadden says two-year-old Jonathan Thomas Sturdy wandered away from his home on Busbee Road around 5 o'clock Saturday.



Members from the Walthourville Police Department, fire and rescue units, Hinesville Canine Unit and the Liberty County Sheriffs Office joined volunteers from the community to search for the young child.

Police say Sturdy was found around 8:30 pm about a quarter mile from his home- submerged in water in a canal.
He was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 pm.

The Walthourville Police Department and the Liberty County Sheriffs Office are investigating the case.

This little boy has now been the victim of a murder. The news reports state the autopsy came back showing this. When you read all the different reports something just doesn't fit right about a 2 year old "wandering" away and 30minutes later the mother reports him missing...them he's found so close to the home in a canal! Another casey anthony????

Police are waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a 2 year old who was reported missing.

Jonathan Thomas Sturdy's body was found submerged in water in a drainage canal in a wooded area a few hours after he was reported missing on Saturday.

Police say the toddler wandered away from his home on Busbee Road in Walthourville.

Volunteers organized a search party to help find the toddler. Police aren't saying if they believe foul play is involved or if this is just a tragic accident.

"At this time, it's too early the autopsy results will determine where we go from here we have to wait and see on the results of the autopsy," said Interim Chief Tracy McFadden.

Police say the mother was in a different room when the child got out of the house -- the father wasn't home. The couple has one other child.

The autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Moran confirmed the conclusion Thursday, weeks after 2-year-old
Jonathan Thomas Sturdy was reported missing from his Busbee Road home around 5 p.m. Jan. 14.

As the Courier previously reported, Jonathan’s mother, Kayla Sturdy, told authorities the boy had been missing for
about 30 minutes before she called 911.

Volunteers joined the Walthourville Police Department, fire and rescue units, Hinesville police and Liberty County
Sheriff’s Office in a three-hour search that concluded when the boy was found in the canal.

Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive the boy before taking him to Liberty Regional Medical Center in
Hinesville, where doctors worked on him for more than 40 minutes in an attempt to save his life. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., doctors pronounced the child dead, according to Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes.

With the homicide ruling, Moran said detectives continue to look into all possible areas in the case.

“There’s a lot going in with that case,” he said. “We’re trying to follow every lead.”

So far, authorities have not identified a suspect, Moran added.

Moran urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Det. Tracey Jennings at 876-4555.

I just wonder why it's taking them so long to see this???? Law enforcment? The community? I hope this little boy gets justice~

Just wanted to say that you cant say casey anthony without knowing the people. Jimmney crickets i hope jon jon does get justice but the mother you speak of is my aunts sister and my aunt is actually trying to get custody of his brother at the moment. Yes it is extreamly sad but please realize the people you judge without knowing who have not been convicted do have familys too. Thank you

What kind of mother doesn't call 911 IMMEDIATELY if a two year old is missing?

I don't need to know much more than this to make a judgment. There is a world of info in that one fact.

well i once found a young girl walking through my backyard and searched for her mother for about 15 mins with her she was to young to really tell me where she lived, her mom came up the road in a car and the mother had noticed she was gone 45 mins prior to her finding me walking up the street with her daughter. She was 4 blocks from her house. Not saying its right to wait or anything like that. Again it is very sad, no child should ever be murdered and i dont believe that leaving your kids unattended enough to lose them is right at all. No one is perfect and Im not saying she is innocent or guilty just saying their are families of these people you judge and saying she is guilty before she is convicted is chaos. Let the law handel it and them make judgement please

This is a place to express our opinions. We don't need to wait for the legalities to have an opinion.

Not to mention, the decision in a court of law often bears no resemblance to reality. This is a piss poor mother, at the VERY LEAST. IMO.
