State releases more documents in Casey Anthony case

Bianca Prieto |Sentinel Staff Writer9:53 AM EDT, April 6, 2009

The State Attorney's Office has released more evidence in the case against Casey Anthony.

Three DVDs worth of information were made public late this morning.

Orlando Sentinel reporters are reviewing the information now. So far, reporters have viewed photos and cell phone records.

Depicted in some of the photos: private investigator Jim Hoover, California bounty hunter Leonard Padilla and George Anthony.

Information about Deputy Richard Cain, the deputy who was dispatched in August to the scene where the remains of Caylee Marie Anthony were ultimately found, is likely to be among the documents.

Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her toddler, Caylee Marie. The child was last seen alive in June, however authorities were notified of the toddler's disappearance a month later.

Casey Anthony remains at the Orange County Jail.

1:28 p.m.
On the October afternoon that Casey Anthony was indicted, she chatted with detectives at the Orange County Sheriff's Office and even chuckled on several occasions, according to recordings released today. Anthony chatted with a a detective about the media's coverage of her case. She said it was "kind of funny" that the media knew about the grand jury proceedings and indictment. Anthony called her defense lawyer Jose Baez. Anthony said she was at the Sheriff's Office if they wanted to talk with detectives. Sheriff's Cpl. Eric Edwards then got on the phone with Baez. Edwards said if Baez and Anthony are interested in talking face-to-face, for him to come to the Sheriff's Office. Anthony then starts chatting with FBI Agent Nick Savage, who asked if she was anxious about the day. "I have been," Anthony responds. She said she'd been preparing for it. Anthony told Savage she knows that Caylee was alive, despite what investigators had collected in the case against her. "We have more than speculation," Savage said. "We have a lot." The detectives leave the room and Anthony, while waiting, fidgets with her finders, hair and glasses. Later, the detectives come back into the room with Baez. A detective acknowledged that they were being recorded in that room. Baez asked Anthony if she wanted to speak with him in private, and she said yes. After a break, they re-emerge in the room.
Baez told Edwards that Anthony wanted to be taken to the jail and be booked in. "She's invoking her right to counsel," Baez said. Transcripts of numerous previously released interviews with Anthony's current and former friends were also released today.

On the October afternoon that Casey Anthony was indicted, she chatted with detectives at the Orange County Sheriff's Office and even chuckled on several occasions, according to a lengthy audio file released today.. Anthony chatted with sheriff's Cpl. Eric Edwards about the media's coverage of her case. She said it as "kind of funny" that the media new about the grand jury proceedings and indictment. While she's speaking with Edwards, Anthony appears to have called her defense lawyer Jose Baez. Anthony said she was at the Sheriff's Office if they wanted to talk with detectives. It appears that Edwards then got on the phone with Baez. "We have a lot." It's unclear what transpired next. The majority of the two-hour media file doesn't contain much else. Toward the end of the clip, it appears as though detectives came back into the room where Anthony was. She chuckled. Transcripts of numerous previously released interviews with Anthony's current and former friends were also released today.

10:36 a.m.
Dozens of documents, images and other media files are on the DVDs, including: - Images from Casey Anthony's online photo account. Many of the photos and images -- including of Anthony and Anthony Lazzaro, her former boyfriend, were released earlier. - Cell phone records and images that appear to have been taken on a mobile phone. - Photos of private investigator Jim Hoover. He's seen smiling with California bounty hunter Leonard Padilla in one photo. In another, he's with George Anthony and Cindy Anthony. - Calendars covered with hand-written notes that appear to belong to detectives. Notes include when people spoke or last heard from Casey Anthony. - Comments posted on a blog. - An e-mail to Cindy Anthony from her brother. The brother told Cindy Anthony he thought Casey Anthony was lying and that Cindy was in denial. - A document that states Casey Anthony did not graduate on time from Colonial High School. The document states Anthony did get a diploma and likely went to summer school. - A letter from Valencia Community College that states Casey Anthony was never enrolled in the school.

Casey Anthony case: State's mistake gives stations an insight into defendant and "interviews you've been waiting to hear"

Today's big news in the Casey Anthony case was released by mistake. The state attorney's office hadn't meant to put out audio interviews with jail officers about Anthony's reaction to news that her daughter's remains had likely been found.
Jose Baez, Anthony's attorney, hadn't commented on the accidental release of the recordings, WKMG-Channel 6's Mike DeForest said during the 6 p.m. news.
But the stations realized what they had.
"They're the interviews you've been waiting to hear," WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Martie Salt said. "And they said Casey saw it first on Channel 9. "
Funny how the promotion gets mixed in with the news, isn't it?
"The audio recordings will give you insights into Casey Anthony like never before," Salt added.
"It is a stunning and potentially damning account detailing the moments that changed everything: the news that Caylee's remains were likely found," WKMG anchor Jacqueline London said.

The jail officers' comments marked an unusual moment in the case. WFTV's Kathi Belich said: "A jail lieutenant said the only time Casey Anthony has had an emotional outburst at the jail was December 11, after she saw our special report that Caylee's remains had probably been found near her house."
In a WKMG report, a jail lieutenant described Casey's clammy hands and her request for a sedative that day, then the young mother quickly changed the topic to college football.
WKMG's Tony Pipitone looked at what could be a break in the case for the defense. Deputy Richard Cain reversed himself in describing how he reacted in August to a tip from meter reader Roy Kronk, who later found Caylee's remains in December.
Under oath, Cain first said he picked up a bag -- leaves and sticks fell out -- and a close-by Kronk said that was the bag in question.
But six hours later, Cain said he didn't pick up a bag -- just yard waste -- and that Kronk wasn't nearby.
The defense's spokeswoman told Pipitone it wouldn't comment on how Cain's story had "changed dramatically."
Pipitone explained the importance of the contradictions: "It could raise doubts about whether Casey could have dumped that body because she was, of course, in jail."
