A Connecticut woman has received a 5-year
prison sentence for the dehydration death of a toddler.


Forty-year-old Sharon Patterson was sentenced Tuesday in New
Haven Superior Court in the death of 23-month-old Amari Jackson.
When she apologized, the child's mother, Sara Hicks, became so
upset she had to be removed from the courtroom.


Patterson was found guilty in June on lesser charges of
criminally negligent homicide, risk of injury to a minor and
cruelty to a person. She had faced a charge of manslaughter in
Amari's death.


Patterson was accused of withholding fluids from Amari, the
child of a friend, in order to stop him from wetting the bed.
