Police say a central Indiana teenager died
in an apparent accidental shooting committed by his older brother.


The Madison County Sheriff's Department says 17-year-old Andrew
Kistler was killed Saturday night at his Frankton home. Sheriff Ron
Richardson says that when officers arrived they found Kistler's
20-year-old brother threatening to kill himself with a shotgun but
were able to disarm him.


Richardson said the older brother and a witness told officers
the shooting was an accident.


Kistler was a junior at Frankton High School and a kicker on the
school's football team.


About 200 students and their parents attended an impromptu wake
early Sunday in the high school parking lot. A funeral director
says the family has accepted an offer to hold services in the high
school's gymnasium.

FRANKTON, Ind. — Police have determined that the shooting that took the life of a Frankton teenager was accidental, and caused by the mishandling of a weapon. Frankton teen Andrew “A.J.” Kistler, 17, was shot and killed in his home near Frankton Saturday night by his brother, 20-year-old Richard “Rick” Kistler. Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson released a statement Tuesday updating the status of the investigation into the shooting. “Our investigation shows, this incident is a result of an accidental discharge of a shotgun during its mishandling,” Richardson noted. Police were called to the Kistler home in the 3200 block of West County Road 1000 North Saturday just before 9 p.m. in response to the shooting. Upon arrival, an officer with the Department of Natural Resources and Frankton reserve police officer found Rick Kistler outside the house threatening to take his own life with the shotgun. Frankton reserve police officer David Sloderbeck was able to calm Kistler until he turned the weapon over to police. Madison County Coroner Ned Dunnichay said A.J. Kistler died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. A public viewing for A.J. Kistler was held in the gymnasium of Frankton Junior Senior High School on Tuesday and his funeral service will take place in the gymnasium Wednesday at 11 a.m. Richardson said he cannot reveal what happened in the Kistler house leading up to the shooting until Madison County Prosecutor Thomas Broderick has reviewed the report compiled by investigators. Broderick will be presented with the full investigative report Wednesday. “With the facts that have been gathered during the investigation, the captain of detectives contacted the prosecutor this morning and it was agreed that the case would be referred to him for his opinion,” Richardson said. Broderick could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

FRANKTON, Ind. -- A 17-year-old rural Frankton boy was accidentally shot and killed by his brother Saturday, police said.
Officers were called to a home in the 3200 block of West County Road 100 North just before 9 p.m.

Andrew Kistler, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.

FRANKTON, Ind. — The skies above the Frankton Junior Senior High School were painted red Wednesday as a crowd released hundreds of red and white balloons, honoring the Frankton student who died in an accidental shooting Saturday.

Andrew “A.J.” Kistler, 17, was shot and killed when his brother, Richard “Rick” Kistler, 20, accidentally discharged a shotgun in their home.

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- A rural Frankton teen who police said was accidentally shot and killed by his brother earlier this year was named homecoming king Friday night.
The parents of Andrew Kistler accepted the posthumous honor on behalf of their son at Frankton Junior Senior High School's game.
This would have been Kistler's senior year as kicker on the high school football team.
