DANIEL BECHTEL - 4 months (2007) - Phoenix AZ

Phoenix AZ ---- A Phoenix woman was sentenced Monday to 37 years in prison for her
role in the 2007 death of her 4-month-old son, according to the Maricopa
County Attorney's Office.

Katherine Hatten, 25, pleaded guilty last fall to second-degree
murder and child abuse in the case in which the baby died from
malnourishment in a home near Glendale and 27th avenues, where
investigators said the infant and a 2-year-old girl were left to
scavenge for food on floors littered with garbage.
Phoenix police discovered the boy's body in April 2007. They
described the body of Daniel Bechtel as that of a Holocaust victim,
gaunt from starvation. The boy weighed less than 5 pounds at the time he
died, authorities said.
The baby's father, Thaddeus Adam Bechtel, is serving a 22-year
sentence after a jury found him guilty of two counts of child abuse.
Bechtel was never charged with murder because investigators said he was a
long-haul truck driver who only returned home about once per week.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a prepared statement
that the conviction brought "justice" to the infant's memory.
