An Irmo man has received a sentence of life in prison in the
shaking death of his infant son.Alexander Edward Lynch, 24, of
1220 Meredith Drive was sentenced to life imprisonment by Lexington
Judge Knox McMahon for the crime of homicide by child abuse. The
child, Rashard Lynch, was 57 days old and the biological son of the defendant.
The office of Solicitor Donnie Myers released this description of
what happened:Assistant Solicitor Debra Moore said on June 6,
2009, the baby’s mother returned to work for the first time since the
baby’s birth and left the baby in Lynch’s care. Three hours
later, Lynch told police, he picked the baby up and began shaking him
because he would not stop crying.Lynch then laid the baby on a
bed, left the room and smoked a cigarette. When he returned, he found
the baby unresponsive and took the baby to the grandmother who lived in
the same apartment complex.A neighbor attempted CPR until
Lexington County emergency medical personnel arrived and transported the
baby to Lexington Medical Center. A CT scan revealed a devastating
brain injury, and the baby was transferred to Palmetto Health Richland
Hospital. The baby died June 8, 2009, from the injuries.Myers
said, “I will never understand how a father could wreak such pain,
suffering and death to his son.”
