A San Fernando Valley man
could face the death penalty for sexually assaulting and beating to
death his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter. Jurors in Los Angeles
convicted 29-year-old Antonio Rodriguez of murder, torture and six
other counts Thursday. He was acquitted of two other charges. Jurors
will now decide whether to recommend death or life in prison. The
Van Nuys man was convicted of brutalizing Desarie Saravia and her
6-year-old brother, Brian. Prosecutors say the children
suffered months of abuse before Rodriguez molested and beat the girl in a
restroom at a Castaic park in 2004. He'd taken the children to the park
while their mother cleaned a house nearby. The mother, Debby
Saravia, will be tried for murder next month.

has been sentenced to death for sexually assaulting and beating to
death his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter, Desarie Saravia. The
29-year-old southern California man was sentenced Thursday in a San
Fernando courtroom for the 2004 attack. He was convicted in July of
murder, torture and other charges. Prosecutors
say Rodriguez brutalized Desarie and her 6-year-old brother for months
before he molested and beat the girl in a park restroom. He'd taken the children to the park while their mother cleaned a house nearby. Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen said during sentencing that Rodriguez had extinguished the light of an angel. The girl's mother, 32-year-old Debby Saravia, is awaiting trial on murder and other charges.

SAN FERNANDO – A Van Nuys mother charged with the 2004 killing of her 5-year-old daughter pleaded today, the District Attorney’s Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Mary Sedgwick of the San Fernando Branch Office said Debby Saravia, 32, pleaded no contest to child abuse with an allegation that the abuse resulted in the death of Desarie S. Saravia also pleaded, as an aider and abettor, to one count of forcible sexual penetration with a foreign object with great bodily injury as to the girl.
The defendant additionally pleaded to one count of attempted murder as to her 6-year-old son with allegations that a belt was used in the offense and that the child sustained great bodily injury.
Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell said Saravia will be sentenced on Feb. 28 in Department E of San Fernando Superior Court.
Under the terms of a negotiated settlement, the defendant is expected to be sentenced to 28 years, eight months in state prison.
Saravia and her live-in boyfriend, Antonio Rodriguez, 30, were charged in November 2004. Rodriguez was convicted by a jury on July 9, 2010, of eight counts, including first-degree murder, torture, corporal injury to a child and sexual penetration by a foreign object.
Rodriguez was sentenced to death on Sept. 2, 2010.
Saravia knew the children were being physically abused by Rodriguez, but did nothing to stop him, the prosecutor said.
Rodriguez fatally struck Saravia’s young daughter on Nov. 12, 2004. The girl was not breathing when Los Angeles County paramedics responded to the scene.
