IZAAK LEGNAME - 2 yo - Midvale (S of Salt Lake City) UT
Police say a Midvale man critically injured his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, then shot himself following an
argument Saturday at their apartment.
Both the child and the man are expected to
survive, though other effects of the traumas remain unclear, Midvale
police Sgt. Marcelo Rapela said.
Nick Brady, 23, violently shook the child about 11:30 a.m., then threw him on a bed, said Midvale police Capt.
Steve Shreeve. The toddler, Izaak Legname, also may have hit a wall behind the bed.
The mother scooped up Izaak and ran upstairs. Brady then put a 9 mm pistol under his chin and fired, Shreeve and Rapela said.
The mother heard the gunshot and called
police. Officers arrived less than a minute later and found Brady moving
but Izaak unconscious and unresponsive. He was taken to Primary
Children’s Medical Center and Brady went to Intermountain Medical Center.
“The baby’s probably going to pull through
and then will be turned over to his natural father until [the Utah
Division of Child and Family Services] does what they need to do,” Rapela said.
Rapela said he expects criminal charges to be filed against Brady.
The couple moved into the apartment in the
7800 block of Main Street, close to the Midvale Police Station, about a
year ago, Shreeve said. Brady is not the child’s father and does not
have a criminal history, Shreeve said.
There have been no previous domestic violence calls at the apartment, according to Shreeve.

A 23-year-old man severely injured his girlfriend's toddler and then
shot himself in the head Saturday morning, leaving both in critical
condition, according to police.
Midvale Police Capt. Steve Shreeve said
police responded within 60 seconds to a call made at 11:58 a.m., from a
residence near 7800 S. Main, which is close to the police station.
Inside the residence, police found a man shot in the head and an unresponsive 2-year-old boy.
"The details are sketchy, but it was some kind of domestic issue," Shreeve said.
Shreeve said a 21-year-old woman in the
building gave police a preliminary statement and then she headed to
Primary Children's Medical Center, where her young son was being taken.
By Saturday evening, both the man and the boy were expected to pull through, said Midvale Sgt. Marcelo Rapela.
The boy suffered a brain injury and was expected to be kept at the hospital overnight, Rapela said.
The Division of Child and Family Services is expected to launch a child abuse investigation, he added.
The boy will likely go with his natural father until the end of that investigation, Rapela said.
The woman is not being considered as a suspect, Shreeve said.
