Woman to serve 1 year in burn case
11:13 AM, Sep. 7, 2011
A Canton mom will serve one year in prison for hot water burns her then-4-year-old daughter suffered last fall.
Michelle Moore avoided trial Sept. 19 in Madison County Circuit Court by pleading guilty Tuesday to one count of failure to provide medical care.
The charge carries a maximum five years and a $5,000 fine.
Judge William Chapman sentenced Moore, 25, to five years, but suspended four.
Moore has been out on bond since November. She was taken into custody following the plea and will be on probation for five years upon release.
Madison-Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest said Moore was indicted only on a charge of not seeking medical treatment.
"The child in fact suffered burns to her legs," Guest said. "We were not able to determine if the burns were caused intentionally by Ms. Moore."
On Oct. 19, 2010, the girl was burned on both legs after running into a bucket of scalding hot water in Moore's home on Isabella Street.
The child was treated at University of Mississippi Medical Center then taken into custody by the state Department of Human Services.
Guest did not know if the child is still with DHS or with relatives now.
Canton police said, though the child was hurt Oct. 19, they did not receive a call until two days later. Moore told police she was afraid to take her daughter to the hospital for fear DHS would take her.
Moore said she immediately put cool water on the child's legs and tended to the burns for two days.
An investigation concluded Moore failed to seek proper medical attention.
