Cops ID person of interest in boy's death

HOBBS, Ind. (KOKOMO TRIBUNE) - The investigation into the death of a 4-year-old Hobbs boy revealed the child died of blunt force trauma. The autopsy showed 4-year-old Dylan Cast suffered from injuries to his mid-section, back and spine, the Tipton County Sheriff Department. No arrests have been made in the case and it remains under investigation. However, police say they have identified “a person of interest” in the case. Tipton County Sheriff Deputy Denny Pearson said Cast was found unresponsive in his home Friday morning and rushed to Tipton Hospital’s emergency room. Attempts to revive the child by medical personnel were unsuccessful. Tipton County Coroner Brad Nichols pronounced the child dead of blunt force trauma. Indiana State Police and Child Protective Services are assisting deputies with the investigation into events surrounding the child’s death. “Interviews have been conducted and are ongoing as a person of interest has been identified,” Sheriff Frank Fritch said in a news release. Friday morning, Dylan was home with his 5-year-old sibling and his mother’s fiancé, police said. The man told police that the other child came in and told him there was something wrong with Dylan. He saw the child was unresponsive and immediately called 911, Pearson said. The children’s mother had left for work earlier in the morning and said the children were fine when she left. Pearson said the 5-year-old has been removed from the home by the state, as is customary in cases where there has been a death of a child in the home. New charges were filed Wednesday against a man accused of killing a four-year-old Tipton County boy.

James Rice was charged with felony neglect. That's on top of the battery and reckless homicide counts he already faces in the death of four-year-old Cory Cast.

According to court documents, Rice struck the child after he had an accident while being potty trained in November.

An autopsy showed the boy died from blunt force trauma.
