Mother faces abuse charge after toddler suffers injuries

Ashley Sneed, 20, of Mount Washington, is currently in the Bullitt County Detention Center
on a single count of criminal abuse.
According to Det. Scotty McGaha of the Bullitt County Sheriff’s
Department, Sneed was arrested at her place of work on Monday afternoon.
On Friday evening, the boy’s father brought him into Jewish Hospital
Medical Center South. Emergency room workers contacted law enforcement about the injuries.
McGaha said the child suffered massive bruising to his lower back, legs, buttock and private parts.
In talking with doctors at Kosair Children’s Hospital, where the son
was transported by Bullitt County EMS, it was determined that many of
the bruises were caused by some type of object.
The boy has since been released from the hospital and the injuries were not life threatening.
McGaha said Sneed was charged with criminal abuse because she either
injured the child or allowed someone else to injury the infant.
At this time, McGaha said the investigation continues. Another male
subject apparently watched the child at some point. The injuries were newly inflicted.
The mother’s story was that the child had suffered the injuries in a
fall in the snow and ice; however, McGaha said doctors knew that the
injuries could not have come from such a fall.
Sneed remains in the Bullitt County Detention Center.
She was arraigned on Tuesday morning in Bullitt District Court.

A Bullitt County mother charged with causing
serious injuries to her two-year-old son was in court Tuesday. Ashley
Sneed, 20 pleaded not guilty.
A relative of Sneed, who didn't want to
appear on camera, told us her daughter was staying with her in Mount
Washington. She says she had no idea her two-year-old grandson was being
abused.
Hugo Mueller lives across the street from
where Sneed and her son lived. Like other neighbors on the quiet Bullitt
County street, he's upset by disturbing images of child abuse.
"Across the street, that really hits you," Mueller said. "I didn't think anything like that would happen around here."
Sneed was charged with criminal abuse after
the toddler was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital after his
biological father noticed big bruises covering his son's back and legs
and private areas.
"They have substantiated that the child was
beaten with an object," said Detective Scotty McGaha with the Bullitt
County Sheriff's Office.
McGaha says Sneed claims another man was
babysitting the child. He says as the investigation continues, someone
else could also be charged.
Judge Jennifer Porter is not taking this child abuse case lightly.
"Due to the seriousness of the charge, and
the potential danger not only to the victim but also to the community,
today the court is going to set a $500,000 full cash bond," Porter said.
"There's to be no contact with the victim," Judge Porter said.
Officials say the boy is recovering and Child Protective Services has removed him from the home.
